Steve Seifert

Friday 8:45-10:00 Session 1F Mountain Dulcimer Advanced

Chord Shapes and Arpeggios - After a brief review of the main three chord shapes, I'll show you arpeggios I use for warming up AND for adding my own licks to tunes. I'll bring some barebones versions of tunes to practice. The goal is to bring new life to whatever you want to play. Arpeggios show you the best notes to rely on.

Friday 1:00-2:15 Session 3F Mountain Dulcimer Advanced

David Schnaufer's "The Way You Move Air" - Learn this beautiful, slow and jazzy composition by dulcimer master David Schnaufer. I've finally transcribed this fingerpicking classic note-for-note, including some fantastic chords. We'll play the tune in both the lower and upper octaves. I still remember playing this with David, and I'll be sharing with you a good bit of his innovative techniques.

Saturday 8:45-10:00 Session 6E Mountain Dulcimer Intermediate

Playable Versions of Fancy Jam Tunes - There's a bunch of common jam tunes that are just a little bit harder to pull off at faster tempos. Learn tried and true ways old-time musicians play simpler versions of harder tunes that allow everyone to jam and grow together. I'll bring a bunch of these tunes and give you a sneak peek towards one day making them fancier.

Saturday 10:15-11:30 Session 7N Chromatic Mountain Dulcimer

Intro to Chromatic Mountain Dulcimer - Bring a chromatically fretted mountain dulcimer tuned DAD if you have one. If you don't, you're welcome to come anyway. I'm going to start by taking you on a little tour of what's possible with these extra frets. Next, for those with these instruments, I'll show you some exercises and a cool tune or two.

Saturday 1:00-2:15 Session 8F Mountain Dulcimer Advanced

My Approach to Flat-Picking Standards - I'm bringing a bunch of common flat-picking tunes that work really well across the strings. My style isn't just picking single strings. I'll show you how to work in strums to make things more fun and playable. We'll work on flat-picking techniques, too.

Saturday 2:30-3:45 Session 9E Mountain Dulcimer Intermediate

Old-Time Fiddle Tunes I've Been Loving Lately - These tunes have been turning up in jams more and more over the last few years. You need some new ones, and I'm sure some of these will scratch your itch. Bring a capo. While this is mostly a repertoire class, expect a good bit of advice on how to improve your technique.
